The life of the Messenger ﷺ is not merely history — it is the living revelation applied, the complete manifestation of Tawhid, and the perfect model of guidance for mankind.
Allah sent His Messenger ﷺ with revelation to remove darkness, establish Tawhid, purify souls, cultivate believers, and guide humanity to the straight path. His life embodies the Qur'an in action — belief, worship, character, governance, struggle, patience, mercy, and justice — all under divine revelation. Studying the Sirah is therefore not storytelling, but understanding:
As the scholars explain, guidance is inseparable from obedience to the Messenger ﷺ, and the life of the Prophet ﷺ is the explanation of Islam in its complete form.

10. The Messenger ﷺ — Mercy and Guidance for Humanity
Allah sent him as a mercy to mankind — conveying the revelation, calling to the truth, and serving as the means by which Allah guided hearts, purified souls, and established justice.
Before revelation, the Arabian Peninsula lived in deep ignorance (Jāhiliyyah) — religious corruption, moral decay, tribal oppression, and widespread shirk. Idolatry dominated, revelation had ceased, and truth was obscured. Allah said: “He it is Who sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom — although they were before in clear misguidance.” (62:2)
Mankind had deviated into: Worship of idols and false gods, Corruption of earlier scriptures, Moral collapse and injustice, Loss of true Tawhid. Allah said: “Allah is the Protector of those who believe — He brings them out from darkness into light.” (2:257) The coming of the Messenger ﷺ marked the transition from darkness to light.
Allah chose His Messenger ﷺ from the noblest lineage of Quraysh and protected him before Prophethood. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah chose Kinanah from the children of Ismāʿīl, chose Quraysh from Kinanah, chose Banū Hāshim from Quraysh, and chose me from Banū Hāshim.” (Sahih Muslim) His early life was marked by: Protection from shirk and corruption, Truthfulness and trustworthiness (al-Sadiq al-Amin), Noble character and moral purity. This was divine preparation for Prophethood.
Allah prepared His Messenger ﷺ gradually: Protection from idolatry, Purification of the heart, Love of solitude and reflection, Inclination toward truth Allah said: “Did He not find you an orphan and give refuge? And He found you unaware and guided you.” (93:6-7) This nurturing prepared him for revelation.
Seclusion in Hira: Before revelation, the Prophet ﷺ would retreat to the cave of Hira — reflecting, worshipping Allah alone, and distancing from the corruption of society. This marked the final stage of preparation.
Revelation began with the command: “Read in the name of your Lord who created — created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous.” (96:1-3) This moment marked: The beginning of Prophethood, The descent of revelation, The start of guidance for mankind.
After the first revelation, revelation paused briefly — strengthening, preparing, and building readiness for the mission. Then Allah revealed: “O you who covers himself — arise and warn, and magnify your Lord, and purify your garments, and abandon idols.” (74:1-5) This marked the beginning of active warning and mission.
The Prophet ﷺ began calling secretly, then publicly: Calling to Tawhid, Warning against shirk, Teaching revelation, Cultivating believers Allah said: “And warn your closest kindred.” (26:214) The mission of guidance had begun.
Scholars explain: Prophethood (Nubuwwah): Receiving revelation. Messengership (Risalah): Being commanded to convey and warn publicly. With the command “Arise and warn”, the Prophet ﷺ became the Messenger to mankind.
Allah said: “O Messenger, convey that which has been revealed to you from your Lord.” (5:67) The mission of revelation was now fully underway.
Revelation marked the beginning of the divine commission of the Prophet ﷺ — a mission rooted in Tawhid, purification, cultivation, establishment, and completion. The Qur’an itself outlines the framework of this mission: calling to the oneness of Allah, purifying belief, forming the believer, establishing the community upon revelation, and completing the religion for mankind.
The first command given to the Messenger ﷺ was to magnify (worship) Allah alone and abandon shirk. Allah said: “O you who covers himself [with a garment], arise and warn. And your Lord glorify. And your garments purify. And keep away from idols.” (74:1–5)
The early scholars explained that “keep away from idols” is the first prohibition revealed — the prohibition of shirk — establishing Tawhid as the foundation of the entire mission.
Revelation began with the command to read — signifying knowledge, transmission, and divine teaching. Allah said: “Read in the name of your Lord who created — created man from a clot. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous — Who taught by the pen — taught man that which he knew not.” (96:1–5)
Allah also affirmed the truthfulness of revelation by reminding that the Messenger ﷺ was unlettered: “Neither did you read any book before it, nor did you write it with your right hand.” (29:48) Thus, revelation itself became the proof, the teacher, and the foundation of the mission.
The scholars clarified that the most beloved slave of Allah ﷺ became a Prophet with the revelation of “Read,” and became a Messenger when commanded to publicly warn and convey: “O you who covers himself, arise and warn.” (74:1–2) This marked the transition from receiving revelation to delivering it to mankind.
The mission of revelation purified belief before actions. The greatest purification is purification from shirk. Allah said: “And your Lord glorify.” (74:3) Meaning: single Him out in greatness, worship, and devotion. The scholars explained that purification from shirk and false beliefs is the foundation upon which all righteous actions are built.
The religion was established step by step. Tawhid preceded even the greatest obligations after it.
Prayer, though the greatest pillar after Tawhid, was not obligated until later — so that Tawhid would first become firm in the hearts. This demonstrates the prophetic method: belief is established before law, and foundations before structure.
The early revelation focused on building the believer — strengthening faith, sincerity, patience, and reliance upon Allah. Allah said: “And be patient for the sake of your Lord.” (74:7) Thus, revelation cultivated hearts before building societies.
Through revelation, the believing community was formed — united upon Tawhid, sincerity, obedience, and revelation. Allah described the role of revelation: “It is He who sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves — reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom.” (62:2) Revelation created a purified believing society rooted in faith and knowledge.
Once belief was established, revelation governed life — worship, law, community, and conduct. Allah said: “And judge between them by what Allah has revealed.” (5:49) Thus, revelation became the authority guiding individual and society alike.
The mission of revelation concluded with the perfection of the religion. Allah said: “This day I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (5:3) Thus, revelation began with commissioning and ended with completion — establishing Tawhid, purifying mankind, and guiding creation until the Day of Judgment.
Allah guaranteed the preservation of His revelation — the Qur’an and the Sunnah — thereby safeguarding the religion, completing the message, and protecting the path of guidance for all generations. Allah said: “Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will surely preserve it.” (15:9) The scholars explained that adh-Dhikr (the Reminder) includes the Qur’an and what clarifies and explains it — the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ. Allah said: “And We revealed to you the Reminder so that you may clarify to the people what was sent down to them.” (16:44) Thus, the Sunnah is revelation explaining revelation.
The Messenger ﷺ said: “Indeed, I was given the Qur’an and something like it along with it.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, no. 4604 — authenticated by al-Albani) Through the preservation of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, Allah preserved the religion in its belief, worship, law, and guidance — ensuring that the mission of the Messenger ﷺ remains clear and protected until the Day of Judgment.
